Fall lawn plugging and reseeding

When: Late August-Mid October

  1. Take a soil test and send to a private lab for review. Most Piedmont NC Soils are compacted heavy acidic clay. You will need to break up the soil and apply lime, sand, and organic matter to get the best results.
  2. Over seed and lime your lawn per soil test using a broadcasting push spreader. Buy an Improved Three-fescue blend seed mix at your seed supply store. Do not buy any mix with Rye grass. Mix the seed 50/50 with pellet lime. Apply 25 pounds of improved Fescue seed per acre. Make multiple spreader passes at right angles to get even coverage.
  3. Thoroughly plug your lawn using a pull-behind plugger-or core aerator turn the lawn into Swiss cheese. Pluggers extract small earthen ‘plugs’ from the lawn, opening 1⁄2” diameter holes ideal for new fescue seedlings. Plugs should be about two inches deep. SOIL MUST BE MOIST FOR THE PLUGGER TO WORK PROPERLY, so plug after a rain. Attach the plugger to your lawn tractor. Weighting the plugger with cinder blocks or sandbags may be necessary to get good soil penetration. Make four or five ‘passes’ until the plug holes are one to two inches apart and the lawn looks like swiss cheese.
  4. Lime and fertilize your lawn using the push spreader, apply 100# of 18-18-18 Fertilizer and 25# of improved fescue seed per acre. Mix the fertilizer and seed 50/50 with lime and make multiple spreader passes at right angles to get even coverage and avoid ‘banding’.
  5. Apply Black Wonder 5000 Organic Compost and sand. Use a drop spreader. Apply 50 bags of Black Wonder 5000 compost per acre. If your lawn is heavy clay, mix the Black Wonder 5000 50/50 with clean builders’ sand. Make multiple spreader passes at right angles to get even coverage.
  6. Rake or drag the lawn to fill holes with seed and compost. Make several passes with a lawn tractor, pulling a section of chain link fence to break up materials and fill the plug holes evenly. Or rake to fill plugged holes with the compost and sand mix.
  7. Water your lawn and keep moist. Sharpen your lawn mower blades. Begin mowing [4” cut] when new grass is 5 or 6 inches tall.
  8. Note: Spreaders can be rented at hardware or supply stores

WHY BLACK WONDER 5000 IS GREAT FOR HYDROSEEDERS

1. Black Wonder 5000 is rich in nutrients. Most Hydroseeding is done in dead sub soil and needs Black Wonder to bring it to life.

2. Black Wonder 5000 protects tender seed.  Your expensive seed is wrapped with super enriched compost to protect it and keep it from drying out until it sprouts and grows.

3. Black Wonder 5000 coats your seed with Humic Acid, a proven ingredient to speed germination. Fast grass. Less chance for washouts or erosion fines.  Black Wonder 5000 puts money in the Hydroseeder’s and customer’s pockets.

4. Black Wonder 5000 soil enzymes go to work fast to make plant food for the new seedlings.

5. Black Wonder 5000’s Humic acids help make plant food.

6. Black Wonder 5000 polymers grab and hold precious water and the food being produced by the enzymes, Humic and folic acids. Grabbing that ultra- important water just gives the seed more water longer to assure good germination. The polymers will carry the seedlings thru a drought time.

7. Black Wonder 5000’s root fungi attach to the seedlings roots and more than double their ability to pull up needed food and water.  Jump starts seedlings.

8.  Black Wonder 5000’s inoculating good bacteria help make free nitrogen.  These good bacteria attach to the roots of your legume seedlings. The legumes grow nodules to make FREE nitrogen out of the air;  feed themselves and the grasses by putting nitrogen into the dead soil.

9. Black Wonder 5000’s Gypsum provides much needed calcium and improves poor soil structure

10. Black Wonder 5000’s vermiculite holds nutrients and aerates heavy dead soils.

11. Black Wonder 5000 is BLACK.  The BLACK draws heat. Hydroseeding done in cool or cold weather will come up faster as black draws heat. Black is beautiful. Black is the trademark of all rich soils.
